New Driver Car Maintenance Checklist

Did you recently get your driver’s license or first car? Congratulations! The freedom of having your driver’s license or your own car is amazing. But with great freedom comes great responsibility. Maintaining your car is important so that it lasts for many years to come. Take a look at this new driver car maintenance checklist.

Check Wiper Blade

Windshield wipers are an important component of safe driving. When it rains or snows, it can create a safety hazard if your wiper blades don’t do their job properly. Wiper blades are made out of rubber, so they’re bound to wear out. Worn-out wiper blades can leave streaks and create unnecessary driving difficulties. So be sure to check your wiper blades periodically and consider replacing them once a year.

Top Off Windshield Washer Fluid

On rainy, snowy, icy, dusty, or buggy days, you’ll need more than your wipers to keep the windshield clean. You’ll need windshield washer fluid to adequately clean your windshield. For this reason, you need to pay attention to your fluid warning monitor. Fill the washer fluid tank monthly or when the warning alerts you. Additionally, use the appropriate washer fluid for the conditions you drive in.

Change the Oil

Some new drivers don’t realize they need to spend money on oil changes. If you have a gasoline-driven vehicle you’ll need to get an oil change every 5,000 miles or approximately every six months. That’s because, over time, the oil in your engine gets contaminated and must be replaced to keep your engine running smoothly. Have a professional mechanic check and change yours according to your owner’s manual.

Tires

Tires have a big impact on vehicle handling. As a new driver, you want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to improve vehicle handling to avoid an accident. Be sure to check and maintain your tires. Check to ensure that your tires are properly inflated and ensure that the tires have proper tread depth. To find the proper tire inflation level, look for the decal on the inside of the driver’s door. To check the tire tread depth, bring your car to a trusted mechanic so they can measure it for you.
