How to Prepare Your Car for Thanksgiving Travel

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Whether you’re driving across town or heading several states away to see family, the last thing you want is car trouble putting a damper on your plans.

Before you pack up the car and hit the road, it’s worth taking a little time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey ahead. With the right preparation, you can travel safely, avoid unnecessary stress, and focus on what matters most—spending time with loved ones. Here’s a complete checklist to help you prepare your car for Thanksgiving travel.

Check Your Fluids

Fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle. Before any long drive, make sure all essential fluids are clean and filled to the proper levels, including:

  • Engine oil – Check both the level and the color. If it’s dark or dirty, it’s time for an oil change.
  • Coolant (antifreeze) – This keeps your engine from overheating and prevents freezing in cold weather.
  • Brake fluid – Low brake fluid can indicate worn pads or a leak.
  • Transmission fluid – Vital for smooth shifting and transmission performance.
  • Windshield washer fluid – You’ll need this for clear visibility, especially if you encounter road grime or snow.

Inspect Your Tires

Your tires are what keep you connected to the road—and with unpredictable fall weather, traction is everything.

Before you travel:

  • Check tire pressure: Cold temperatures cause air pressure to drop. Inflate tires to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (found on the inside of your driver’s door).
  • Inspect tread depth: Worn-out tread can reduce grip, especially in rain or snow. If you can’t see the top of Lincoln’s head on a penny when inserted into the tread, it’s time to have your tires replaced.
  • Don’t forget the spare: Make sure your spare tire is properly inflated and your jack and tools are in good condition.

Test Your Battery

Cold weather can take a toll on car batteries, and the last thing you want is to be stranded in a rest area with a car that won’t start.

Have your battery tested before your trip to ensure it’s holding a proper charge. Most batteries last 3–5 years, but factors like heat, cold, and short trips can shorten their lifespan.

Check Your Brakes

Brakes are one of your car’s most critical safety systems, especially during heavy holiday traffic or sudden stops on icy roads.

If you’ve noticed squeaking, grinding, or a soft brake pedal, don’t ignore it. Have your brakes inspected for:

  • Pad and rotor wear
  • Proper fluid levels
  • Even braking performance

A pre-trip brake check ensures your vehicle can stop safely, even in less-than-ideal road conditions.

Inspect Your Lights and Wipers

With shorter daylight hours in late November, you’ll likely be driving in the dark more often. Make sure all your lights are working properly:

  • Headlights and taillights
  • Turn signals and brake lights
  • Interior and license plate lights

Also, don’t forget your windshield wipers. If they’re streaking or skipping, replace them before your trip. Visibility is crucial, especially if you encounter rain, sleet, or snow.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Even with proper maintenance, unexpected situations can happen. Be prepared by keeping an emergency kit in your car that includes:

  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Blanket and gloves
  • First aid kit
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Bottled water and snacks
  • Phone charger or power bank

If you’re traveling in areas prone to snow or ice, consider adding a small shovel, ice scraper, and traction material (like sand or kitty litter).
