Your tires are what allow you to drive smoothly and safely. Your tires are equipped with treads. The purpose of these treads is to divert water from beneath the tire, improve traction, and avoid hydroplaning. When the tire treads wear down, it can cause a variety of problems. Although there’s no way to know exactly how long your tires will last, you’ll know when it’s time to replace them when any of these things are true.
Tires typically last up to five years. After five years, manufacturers recommend getting them inspected at least once per year by a professional mechanic. If your tires are over five years old and exhibiting problems, it’s time to have them replaced. The longest tires can last without needing a replacement is ten years. If your tires haven’t been replaced in ten years, you should have a professional mechanic replace them immediately.
There will be instances when the tread on a tire wears off at different rates. Uneven tire wear is usually caused by improper alignment, overinflation, underinflation, or worn-out suspension. When uneven tread wear occurs, parts of the tire can look perfectly fine while other parts are worn down to the cords. If you see that your tires have worn out unevenly, have them replaced by your mechanic.
Your tires should never make weird or excessive noises. If they are making noises, especially on smooth roads, it can indicate a myriad of tire problems. It can mean anything from worn suspension parts to poor wheel alignment to improperly inflated tires. No matter the cause of the weird noises, it’s a clear sign that you need to have your tires replaced. The noises could be due to damaged or uneven tread wear.
Have you noticed that you’re putting air in your tires more often? That can be because your tires have a small leak. Sometimes you can fix the problem by patching the affected tire up. However, other times you may need to have your tires replaced. Bring your car to your mechanic for an inspection, and determine the best course of action.
