8 Things to Keep in Your Car in Case of Emergency in 2020

Emergencies can happen anytime, but during the winter in Ohio, it is especially important to have some key things in your car in case of an emergency. You never know when you might be stuck on the side of the road, or run into an unforeseen circumstance. Here is a list of eight things you should always keep in your car in case of an emergency.

car kit for emergencies

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit should be the first thing to go into your car’s emergency kit. No matter what circumstances you find yourself in, a first aid kit can be a literal lifesaver. Commercial first aid kits can be purchased that include everything you might need in an emergency, or you can put one together yourself using bandages, antiseptic ointment, pain relievers, etc.

Spare Tire

A spare tire is a good idea no matter where you are driving. Instead of being stranded on the side of the road you can use your spare tire to get you where you need to go. If you do have a spare tire, make sure to also have a jack and tire iron so you are able to change it. If it’s been a while since you’ve had to change a tire, it’s always a good idea to brush up on it so you aren’t left stranded and unprepared.

Tools

A small toolkit can come in handy if you run into minor car troubles. In your car, this toolkit should also include some necessary car fluids, such as brake fluid, antifreeze, and oil. In addition to fluids, it’s also a good idea to include things like a screwdriver, pocket knife, and wrench.

Jumper Cables

You never know when your battery might die, or when the battery of the car next to you might die. By having jumper cables in your car, you can be prepared for an unexpected dead battery. Whether your battery is getting old or you accidentally left an interior light on, you can rest easy knowing you can jump your car to start your battery and get yourself home.

Water

In the event that your car breaks down along the side of the road, you may be stranded for quite some time. Having cleandrinking water in your vehicle is a smart idea, so you don’t find yourself stranded without something to drink. Likewise, having some snacks may also be a good idea, especially if you have children or an illness such as diabetes that requires you to eat frequently.

Warm Clothing or Blankets

Winters here in Medina, OH can be brutally cold, so having additional warm clothing in your car is essential. If your car breaks down during an especially cold day or during a snowstorm, you’ll be glad you have layers to bundle up in. If you don’t have additional coats to keep in your car, blankets can also be a good solution.

Flashlights

You may feel like flashlights are unnecessary given that every smartphone has one already, but your phone’s battery will be invaluable in the event you are stranded on the side of the road. By having flashlights handy you can save your phone battery for what is really important, making calls and sending messages.

Sand or Litter

In Ohio, snow can become a real challenge for drivers on the road. By carrying sand or litter in your trunk you can help prevent becoming stranded if your car slides off the road. Sand and/or litter can be used for traction under your wheels on an icy road, helping you become unstuck.

Having a handful of things in your car in case of emergency could make a huge difference should you become stranded on the road. These eight things can help keep you and your loved ones safe. For all of your Medina, OH auto repair needs, call us at Mighty Auto Pro today!
