5 Overlooked Auto Maintenance To-Do Items

1. Cabin Air Filter

Your cabin air filter can get pretty dirty. That’s because it captures dirt, dust, pollen, and other debris before they can enter the cabin. Cabin air filters are the reason you don’t experience allergy symptoms once inside your vehicle, and they make driving overall more comfortable. When they get dirty and clogged, it can affect your A/C system and engine performance.

2. Transmission Fluid

Most people understand the importance of changing your vehicle’s oil, but fewer people know the importance of changing your transmission fluid. Like motor oil, transmission fluid can get contaminated as the vehicle ages. So be sure to check your transmission fluid levels, as well as check and clean the transmission filter and pan.

3. Battery Terminals

Most drivers don’t spend a lot of time messing around with their car battery, but neglecting it can eventually lead to major problems. Before you end up stranded, be sure to check your vehicle’s battery terminals. Look for loose connections and signs of corrosion. If you see any signs of corrosion on your battery terminals, bring your vehicle into an auto repair shop as soon as possible to have it cleaned. 

4. Fuel System 

A clean fuel system will allow your vehicle to keep gas flowing to the engine and therefore increase power and efficiency. To do a basic clean of your fuel system, use a fuel system additive in the fuel tank and top your fuel level off with new gas. If your fuel system needs a more in-depth cleaning, bring it to your auto mechanic so they can remove the tank and flush it out. 

5. Wheel Alignment 

Incorrect wheel alignment can cause tremendous wear and tear on your wheels as well as affect fuel efficiency. If your auto mechanic doesn’t offer wheel alignment, there’s a good chance that you aren’t going to go out of your way to have your wheels aligned. But next time you visit your auto mechanic for an oil change or to have your vehicle serviced, be sure to ask about wheel alignment service.
