5 Essential Car Maintenance Tips to Keep Teen Drivers Safe

Most teens can’t wait to get their licenses. For those teens who are fortunate to have a car available to drive upon receiving their license, it signifies a new sense of freedom and independence. However, although having a license and a car is exciting, it comes with a lot of responsibility, including maintaining the car you drive. Here are five essential car maintenance tips that keep teen drivers safe.

1. Keep the Tank Filled

Although it seems like a silly tip, it’s an important one. It’s easy to overlook your gauges and run out of gas. Additionally, gas is expensive, so teens may be tempted to ride around town with a near-empty gas tank. It’s important to frequently fill the car with gas to avoid getting stuck and to avoid costly repairs.

2. Keeping an Eye on the Tires

Having good, properly maintained tires are important for a teen’s safety. Tires that are underinflated are 25 percent more likely to be involved in a crash. You can check your tire pressure using an electric gauge. Additionally, always be on the lookout for signs of damage, or low tread. Regular tire rotations can help prolong the life of your tires.

3. Change the Oil

The oil in your car is responsible for lubricating all of its moving parts. If the moving parts of a car are not lubricated, it can cause extensive damage and even catch fire. That’s why it’s important to get regular oil changes and have a trusted mechanic on stand-by in case you notice a leak.

4. Keep an Eye on Your Fluids

In addition to getting regular oil changes, always keep an eye on your car fluids. Car fluids include:

  • Engine oil
  • Engine coolant
  • Transmission fluid
  • Brake fluid
  • Differential fluid
  • Power steering fluid.
  • Hydraulic clutch fluid
  • Window washer fluid

If you don’t know what to look for when it comes to fluid levels, bring your car to a mechanic who will show you what you need to keep track of and where to locate the items.

5. Follow the Driver’s Manual

Every car comes with a driver’s manual. Even if you don’t have a physical copy of it, you can search online for the driver’s manual for your vehicle. This manual tells you everything you need to know about taking care of your vehicle. It has recommended maintenance tasks, important milestones, and more. Taking the time to read the driver’s manual will help you be a safer driver.
