4 Ways to Prepare Your Car for Snow

The fall is finally here and you know what that means; snow is quickly approaching. Gone are the days of clear roads and perfect driving conditions. Instead, it’s time for slick roads and less than perfect driving conditions. Here’s how you can prepare your car to handle it all.

Check Your Tires

When was the last time you’ve inspected your tires? This is the perfect time to do so before conditions get too bad. Have your tires inspected and rotated if you haven’t done so recently. Check your tires’ treads to see if they’re safe to drive on during the winter. If not, quickly have them replaced, or consider investing in snow tires. The last thing you want is to lose control of your car because of worn-out tires.

Have Your Windshield Wiper Blades Replaced

If you have old windshield wipers, or if your wipers are:

  • Skipping
  • Make a scratching sound when used
  • Are bent

…consider getting them replaced before snow arrives. Since the DMV does experience some harsh weather conditions, consider purchasing rubber-clad blades for the winter. These blades fight ice buildup and can make the job of clearing snow off your car easier.

Have Your Brakes Checked

Having well-functioning brakes is crucial during the winter. After snowstorms, the roads are slick and you need brakes that allow you to stop on a dime. Brake pads should always be at least ¼ inch thick. If your brakes are worn out, have them replaced immediately to ensure your safety and avoid costly repairs.

Load Your Car With Supplies

Unfortunately, you may get stuck on the road when there’s snow on the ground. If this does happen, you want to make sure that your car always has the supplies needed to get you out of that situation, or can help you wait for additional help. Load your car up with supplies such as:

  • An ice scraper
  • Gloves
  • Waterproof matches
  • A small shovel
  • A small knife
  • A  bag of sand or kitty litter (to help provide traction if your car is stuck in snow)
